The Sad Facts About Video Games

It’s very hard not to realize when you look around, that things have changed significantly when it comes to people’s hobbies. More and more teenagers choose the online world over basketball of football or just a simple walk in park. The virtual reality is so captivating, that sociologists fear an “epidemic”. A mental epidemic that is both subtle as well as silent, since most people do not admit they have a problem. World of Warcraft has already a player base of 11 million players after 7 years since its launch and many other games have many other few million player bases. Not only that, but new games are coming forward and gamers jump from one game to another hopping this one will be different. Since an average player spends several hours every day playing his favorite game, he has no friends anymore and he is very frustrated outside his gaming console or computer. Looking at the situation we can safely assume that he has a problem.

But how did this problem occurred? And why do people get so attached to their games. Usually a player play multiples games not just one. If he wanted to quit he could sell used video games online for cash and use those money to purchase a quality basketball ball or why not an remote controller helicopter. The options are endless, but it’s hard to tell these folks that their virtual world has nothing to do with the real world. If they are a “Level 85 Hunter” in World of Warcraft that doesn’t make them a better person in real life. When they log off, their lives remain the same, and frustration unconsciously builds up. In the end, they lash out to their loved ones: family and friends when they are trying to make them see their situation. As they started to play games more often, they begin to lose perspective and forget what’s important for them.

A lot of gamers have lost their real life friends. Their replaced them with virtual ones. Although there are real people behind gaming characters, they are not the same in real life. A “good friend” in game will most likely not interest you in real life. That is why is important to maintain a good relationship with your real life friends, despite your gaming habits, because these people will bring you to your senses from time to time.

If you have friends that play a lot of games try to not give up on them. Forget their bitterness and hope they will soon realize how important their real life and friends are. Actually, some people have taken the healthy step: they took all of their games, searched for an appropriate website like Trade 2 Save and sold their used games online. You too can sell your games if you feel that your gaming habits got out of hand and you can’t control your addiction anymore. But this is easier said than done. By the time we realize that we lost 5 years of our lives playing some game that gives us nothing in the end, we feel older and a deep regret that our lives have gone by and we haven’t done anything about. Sell your games online and get back to your real life hobbies.

We Don’t Admit That We Are Addicted to Video Games

Video games belong to a sector of entertainment that psychologists and scientists don’t usually look upon. Recently, people have started to pay more and more attention to this area. “Gaming”, as they like to call it, is indeed a phenomenon. An increasing number of teenagers and adults spend up to 16 hours per day playing their favorite video games. These days there is an abundance of games to match everyone’s preferences. If you don’t like games, then you probably haven’t found one that catches your interest. It is so easy to get addicted to video games. Companies make millions by selling video games. In a couple years they will make more money than the movie companies, if they are not already. But video games mean “serious business”, for both the companies and the players.

Not too long ago, when you wanted to play a video game, you had to buy a very expensive gaming console, purchase a couple of games and spend a few hours in front of your TV, entertaining yourself. The games at that time weren’t that strong for our psyche and few people could actually spend more than a few hours a day playing them. But now, with the vast industry of MMO (massive multiplayer online) games, the situation is completely different. Video games are more captivating, much more real and even more than that, unlike the old days, now you can play with real people. Real people that you interact with and form bounds, real friendship using the virtual world of gaming.

It’s not hard to give up on the game itself, but to give up on your friends. Our natural tendency to form friendships binds us to the games, and it’s not the game itself. Our brains link the video gaming experience to the feelings we get when we interact with other people. For our brains, it is all REAL. The games give us a social status and a place where we feel appreciated for our skills. Unlike the real world, where the social progression is hindered by an great amount of factors and getting anything done requires a lot of work and stress, in the gaming world everything flows naturally. We “kill” this creature and we get this amount of “points” and we then use those points to buy this in game “item” which makes us stronger, popular and useful inside the game. It is all straightforward and linear. But not the real world. The real world is much more complex and harder to deal with and there are few rewards.

When you ask a teenager if he is addicted to videogames and if he wants to sell used video games to break his habit, you will get an unpleasant response. First, he will tell you that he is control of what he is doing and playing game is his everyday choice and second, if he wants to sell his used video games he will find a way to do it online. Weather he is in control or not, we don’t really know, but what we do know is that if he wants to break his habit, there is a good way to do it : let him sell his used video games online and do something else that is useful to him.

E3 Los Angeles – How Game Developers can retain their price tags.

The $60 price tag for the latest platform games is becoming harder in the constantly evolving game industry which right now is in a state of flux. Though sales are down by about 10% on last year, it’s still a $10 billion plus dollar industry.

What is challenging the industry today is people’s willingness to spend as much as they did before on individual game titles. There have been two responses to this. Many developers have simply lowered their price. But with development becoming more expensive every year, this is unlikely to have a positive response from investors.

EA on the other hand are holding fast and challenging the market’s direction with innovative and ever more expensive creations, like Star Wars The Old Republic, the most expensive game ever developed, and now Mass Effect 3, trailer-ed at E3 yesterday.

With more money being pumped into development, maintaining the $60+ price tag per unit is going to be crucial.

Offering store credit is a desirable way forward because it encourages return customers, however, a $5 store credit offering ultimately lowers the ticket price by about 8%, which in affect is a price reduction.

Another way would be for developers to team up with an electronics trade in website, where customers could trade in unwanted electronics like cell phones and old laptops for store credit. The trade-in company would issue the store credit to the customer who traded in, say his old blackberry, and then pass on the face value of that store credit to the developers.

This method of generating store credit has been adopted by a number of big box retailers like Walmart and Target. One great advantage is that the developers will get the money before the customer spends the store credit, making it easier to raise funds quickly for the next blockbuster game development.

The Customers are happy too because they no longer look at the high $60 price tag. They may have accumulated a large amount of store credit through trading in unwanted gadgets.

With gaming prices on the downward trend, and the new influx of free Apps like Crazy Birds, developers are going to have an uphill struggle to maintain the price tags they need to protect their cash flow and continue to produce great games. This new and growing electronics trade in option could be the answer, given that gamers have more gadgets in their bottom drawers than any other customer group.
